Let’s eat cake by the ocean.

I am (monkishly) aware of the sexual innuendo about ‘eating cake by the ocean.’ And as much as I love writing about (and having) sex — not today, my friends, not today.

This picture presents my coffee shop jam session set up, where I meet with my dad on Sunday mornings, buy him a latte, discuss the inevitable future of life and death, and rock our hearts until the sweet sounds of our serenades drown out the world’s problems.

I write semi-regularly about these infamous “jam sessions” with my dad, and for years, something always comes up, whether it’s mental illness, divorce, or both. (Ha!)

No, but really, whenever my dad and I start to get the band back together, life consistently throws us for a loop — and not the melodic, seamless-sounding kind, either.

However, when I look at this picture, and that bass line begins to slap (in my headphones while writing this piece), my heart smiles, and my soul is soothed from its soul shine.

“Let’s lose our minds and go fucking crazy
I-I-I-I-I, I keep hopin’ we’ll eat by the ocean, uh.”

With a title implying how exhilarating having sex on the beach is, I hesitated to associate it with an article about playing guitar with my dad. And it’s in that moment where I find the freedom I’m forever fiending for each time I write; music opens the door to expression, interpretation, and love.

I hope you get to eat desserts by large bodies of water, have sex on the beach, and do whatever makes you happy today because life is too short not to eat cake by the ocean.

Thank you to Vidya Sury, Collecting Smiles, for her November challenge and endless inspiration!
